What Type of Battery is Suitable for NB-IoT Smart Water Meters?

I. Why are AA batteries unsuitable for NB-IoT water meters?

Although AA alkaline batteries are cost-effective and readily available, they have inherent shortcomings such as low capacity and are not suitable for long-term low-current discharge and high-current surges, which completely contradicts the stringent requirements of NB-IoT water meters.

1. Unable to meet ultra-long standby requirements: NB-IoT water meters need to operate stably for 6-10 years or more without manual battery replacement. The capacity and battery life of ordinary AA alkaline batteries simply cannot support this period.

2. Insufficient pulse discharge capability: Water meters are normally in a low-power sleep state, only waking up periodically to connect to the network and upload data. This process generates a momentary pulse of high current. AA alkaline batteries experience a significant voltage drop in this scenario, easily leading to communication failures and affecting data transmission stability.

3. Poor environmental adaptability: Water meters are often installed in stairwells, manholes, and other locations with humid environments and drastic temperature changes. Professional lithium batteries (working temperature range -40℃~+85℃) have a much wider temperature range than AA batteries and can withstand harsh working conditions.

4. Insufficient reliability and safety: Water meters are enclosed metering devices. The replaceable design of AA batteries can easily lead to poor contact and damage to the equipment due to leakage from low-quality batteries; while dedicated lithium batteries are securely packaged, have anti-leakage and explosion-proof characteristics, and are suitable for enclosed environments.

II. Core Advantages of Dedicated Lithium Batteries for NB-IoT Water Meters

NB-IoT water meters are equipped with lithium thionyl chloride batteries such as ER26500 and ER18505, whose performance precisely matches the needs of IoT devices. The core advantages are as follows:

1. High energy density: The capacity is 3-5 times that of alkaline batteries of the same volume, which is the core foundation for achieving a ten-year battery life. 2. Ultra-low self-discharge rate: Annual self-discharge rate <1%, allowing for long-term power retention, perfectly suited for the water meter's sleep mode.

3. Excellent pulse discharge performance: Can stably handle the instantaneous high current demand when the NB-IoT module connects to the network, ensuring smooth data transmission.

4. Wide temperature range adaptability: Provides stable power supply in extreme hot and cold environments, suitable for various installation scenarios.

5. Long lifespan characteristics: The chemical system is specifically designed for low-power, long-cycle IoT applications, inherently suitable for water meter usage requirements.

Additional explanation: Why not use rechargeable lithium batteries? A rechargeable solution with solar panels would significantly increase manufacturing costs and structural complexity, and water meters are often installed in dark environments, making effective charging impossible. Therefore, a disposable, high-capacity dedicated lithium battery is currently the most economical and reliable option.

III. Users do not need to worry about battery maintenance

1. Precise lifespan matching: The battery's design life matches the water meter's 10-year service life. Before the battery is depleted, the water meter system and management platform will send a low-battery alarm via the NB-IoT network, and the water company will arrange for maintenance.

2. Professional maintenance scope: The battery is sealed within the water meter casing; users cannot and do not need to replace it themselves. Maintenance is handled professionally by the water company.
