1. Product Positioning: Three-Phase Metering Terminal for Interoperable Smart Grids

This is a three-phase smart meter designed for commercial, industrial and distribution transformer areas. It natively supports the DLMS/COSEM protocol stack defined under the IEC 62056 series standards. As smart grids evolve from closed proprietary systems toward open interoperable architectures, the meter is more than an energy accumulator — it acts as an edge data node within Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI). It solves protocol silos caused by multi-vendor deployments and frees data acquisition from proprietary manufacturer protocols.

For power utilities and large campuses building DLMS-based systems, this meter can connect directly to HES/MDM head-end systems compliant with IEC 62056-5-3 and IEC 62056-6-2. No extra protocol conversion gateways are required, lowering system integration complexity and long-term O&M costs.

2. Why DLMS/COSEM Is the Core Advantage

DLMS/COSEM is an international standard for energy metering data exchange developed by IEC TC13. Its core value lies in abstracting meter data into a standardized object model. Each data point (forward active energy, phase A voltage, load profile, etc.) maps to a COSEM interface object with a unique OBIS code. Clients access data through unified GET/SET/ACTION services.

3. Metering & Monitoring Capabilities

3.1 Energy Metering

  • Active energy: forward / reverse, accuracy Class 0.5S (CT-connected) or Class 1 (direct-connected)
  • Reactive energy: forward / reverse, four-quadrant metering
  • Per-phase metering: separate accumulation of forward active energy for Phase A/B/C to support phase loss analysis
  • Time-of-Use (TOU) metering: up to 8 tariffs, 14 seasons, 8 daily schedules

3.2 Real-Time Grid Parameters

Measures voltage, current, active power, reactive power, apparent power, power factor, frequency, plus 2nd to 31st individual harmonics and total harmonic distortion. All instantaneous values are exposed as COSEM Register or Extended Register objects for on-demand reading by DLMS clients.

3.3 Load Profiles & Event Logging

Profile Generic: Large on-board memory. Capture objects (three-phase voltage, current, active power) and recording intervals (15/30/60 min configurable). FIFO storage supports selective time-range access to reduce communication overhead from full data uploads.

Event logs: Records timestamp and status word for loss of voltage, phase failure, phase sequence error, meter cover opening, magnetic tampering, demand overflow and more. Logs can be retrieved via DLMS Profile Generic or Data objects.

4. DLMS Protocol Implementation (For Integrators)

The meter implements the DLMS stack strictly per international standards with field-oriented optimizations.

Communication Interfaces & Physical Layer.png

Supported services: GET (read attributes), SET (clock sync and selected configuration only), ACTION (demand reset, energy clear), selective-access (time-bounded profile retrieval).

4.1 Communication Interfaces & Physical Layer

  • RS-485 (standard): DLMS over HDLC (IEC 62056-46), default baud rate 9600 bps, compatible with legacy field wiring
  • Infrared / Optical port: Front panel optical port for local maintenance and parameter setup, meets IEC 62056-21 Mode E
  • Optional extensions: GPRS/4G, Ethernet, G3-PLC / PRIME PLC modules for DLMS over IP (IEC 62056-47) and direct TCP/UDP connection to head-end

5. Typical Application Scenarios

Scenario 1: Utility-Scale AMI Rollout

Meters connect via RS-485 or PLC to DCU concentrators. The DCU reads multi-brand meters uniformly using DLMS. The consistent DLMS object model removes the need for custom protocol plugins per meter type and accelerates AMI commissioning.

Scenario 2: Industrial Park Energy Settlement

Tenants and workshops may use mixed meter batches. This DLMS meter acts as a reference metering unit, or legacy non-DLMS meters can be integrated via converters into one unified platform for normalized, sub-item energy metering across the site.

Scenario 3: Export & Overseas Distribution Projects

DLMS/COSEM is frequently a mandatory tender requirement for power utilities across Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Latin America. The standard DLMS implementation satisfies interoperability clauses in technical specifications and mitigates risks during third-party protocol conformance testing.

6. Technical Specification Summary

When selecting smart meters, open communication protocols define the 5–10 year lifecycle value of your equipment. A three-phase smart meter built on DLMS/COSEM essentially grants your AMI system protocol freedom: meters remain usable even if you replace your head-end platform in the future.
